HISTORIC BRICK COLONIAL
PROJECT: MAJOR RENOVATION
LOCATION: HANOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE
DESIGN: DEBORAH BRIEN - RIVERLIGHT BUILDERS
BUILDER: RIVERLIGHT BUILDERS, INC.
A CALIFORNIA COUPLE, BOTH GRADUATES OF DARTMOUTH COLLEGE, SOUGHT A HOME ON THE DARTMOUTH CAMPUS WHERE THEY COULD GATHER WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND STAY CONNECTED TO THEIR MUCH BELOVED ALMA MATER. THEY FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS ANTIQUE BRICK HOME LOCATED RIGHT ON CAMPUS AND NEVER LOOKED BACK. YEARS OF NEGLECT HAD LEFT THEIR MARK AND THEY ENGAGED RIVERLIGHT BUILDERS TO HELP GUIDE THEM THROUGH WHAT WAS SURE TO BE A CHALLENGING RESTORATION. WHILE THE FRONT PORTION OF THE HOUSE NEEDED PRIMARILY COSMETIC RENOVATIONS, THE LARGE REAR ELL WAS ANOTHER STORY ENTIRELY. IT WAS A WARREN OF SMALL ROOMS AND NARROW HALLWAYS. THE 1920'S KITCHEN WAS LARGELY ORIGINAL AND TERRIBLY SMALL. DEBORAH BRIEN DESIGNED AN OPEN CONCEPT FAMILY ROOM, KITCHEN AND BREAKFAST ROOM THAT STAYED TRUE TO THE HOME'S TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE, INCLUDING THE REPLICATION OF MILLWORK AND TRIM DETAILS ORIGINAL TO THE HOUSE, WHILE AFFORDING THE CONVENIENCES OF MODERN LIVING AND LARGE GATHERINGS. SHE WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE OWNER'S CALIFORNIA-BASED INTERIOR DESIGNER TO INSURE THAT NO DETAIL WAS OVERLOOKED, RIGHT DOWN TO THE PLACEMENT OF EACH PIECE OF FURNITURE. THE THE INTERIOR OF THE REAR ELL WAS GUTTED DOWN TO THE STUDS REVEALING A MAJOR STRUCTURAL ISSUE THAT REQUIRED AN ENGINEER TO BE BROUGHT ONTO THE TEAM. A LARGE STEEL BEAM WAS INSTALLED DELAYING THE PROJECT MORE THAN A MONTH, BUT WITH A FIRM COMPLETION DEADLINE OF DARTMOUTH GRADUATION WEEKEND, THE RIVERLIGHT TEAM PULLED TOGETHER THE RESOURCES NECESSARY TO KEEP THE PROJECT ON SCHEDULE AND DELIVER ON TIME.
