TIMELESS KITCHEN

PROJECT: MAJOR KITCHEN RENOVATION
LOCATION: NORWICH, VERMONT DESIGN: DEBORAH BRIEN - RIVERLIGHT BUILDERS BUILDER: RIVERLIGHT BUILDERS, INC. When they were planning to relocate their family from Washington, D.C. to Vermont, this couple promised themselves that their new home would have a large, updated kitchen with plenty of space for them both to prepare meals and entertain friends and family. The 1920's Victorian home they ultimately purchased had large rooms and plenty of them....except for the tiny, cramped kitchen in the rear of the house that was broken up by a staircase right in the middle of it. The owners wanted to work within the footprint of the existing house, so the decision was made that the staircase had to go. The stair was removed, a structural beam was raised and relocated, more windows were added and an open, airy space began to take shape. The family maintains a Kosher kitchen, so storage was a major priority with separate sets of dishes, flatware and utensils required for meat and dairy, and two large undermount sinks help facilitate the separation of items during cleanup. High-end appliances, leathered granite countertops, glass tile accents and Vermont-made lighting fixtures round out the remodeling of this highly functional space in harmony with the period details throughout the rest of the house. |
